L-R: Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, dispensing Kerosine to members of the public, during the Flag-Off of Eyiyato Kero-Direct Enterprise, in Ado-Ekiti... on Monday.

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi on Monday, flagged off the Eyiyato Kero-Direct Enterprise  with an assurance that his administration was committed to ameliorating the sufferings of the people of the State, including  getting them direct supply of kerosene, which is a major household need.

Flagging off the sale of Kerosine to the masses in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State Capital, the Governor said his government decided to buy into the kero-Direct initiative of the Federal Government so that the masses, 80 per cent  of whom  live in the rural areas have access to kerosine at  N50 per litre, hence the committal of substantial funds to the project so that both the rural and urban dwellers can benefit from the scheme.

“This project which is designed to make the product available across all the local government areas of the state, is not a profit making venture but masses- oriented programme with numerous benefits to our people. The State has consequently committed substantial funds to the project to allow for better commitment to the success of this project.

“I like to clarify that the product will be sold at all selling points at the recommended retail price of  N50/litre to the populace and on no account should anyone sell above the recommended retail price”, he said.

The Governor who was apparently touched by the plight of the masses who would queue up at filling stations as well as other sale points where the product is sold for not less than N100 per litre, lamented the destruction and loss of lives and property which have characterised the processes of getting the all important household commodity.

While assuring the people of fairness and equity in the sale of the product across the State so that every end user benefit from the product, Fayemi said the distribution would be handled by Ekiti Enterprise Development Agency (EEDA) in conjunction with the Governor’s office so as to ensure transparency and fairness.

He also warned against giving the gesture a political colouration, adding that it is meant for the generality of the citizens and not for people of a particular political party.

The Governor said: “The sight of the people on long and endless queues at filling stations dispensing the product even at prices far higher than the recommended pump price is common in our localities and very undesirable in decent societies. Excessive profiteering by dealers who sell at exorbitant prices in the neighbourhood further puts more burden on the populace, thereby putting more pressures on the little disposable income they have”, Fayemi added.

The first batch of the product will be distributed by three mobile trucks with 22,000 litres capacity in each of the senatorial districts of the State.
