Fayemi Cautions Politicians Against Violent Acts

July 17, 2013

Ekiti State Governor, Dr  Kayode Fayemi has urged politicians in the state to eschew violence and other acts capable of  eroding peace in the state.

Governor Fayemi who spoke against the background of Tuesday’s violent clash of factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other pockets of avoidable clashes, said in a statement in Ado-Ekiti that it was important for politicians and all those who aspire to public offices to restrain themselves from violence, regardless of the level of provocation.

The Governor in the statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olayinka Oyebode, said it is important for political leaders in the state to work towards sustaining the level of peace and tranquility currently being enjoyed in the state.

He said political leaders should always accommodate each other’s views regardless of differences in party affiliation and political ideology, stressing that political aspirations should be pursued legitimately and with every sense of responsibility.

The Governor said Ekiti people are known as honourable men and women, hence  resorting to violence as a way of settling political differences, does not augur well for the state.

“I sincerely urge all our politicians and leaders of political parties in the state to stay clear of actions capable of throwing the state into crisis as we approach the electioneering period. The peace and well being of the state should remain a top priority to all who aspire to public office.

“While there is bound to be differences in views and ideology, ability to appreciate and manage these differences are  also critical to the credentials of every leader and would be leaders.

“The State government will not relent in its effort at promoting peaceful coexistence among all the citizens of the state, including consultations with political leaders as well as other relevant agencies of government.”, the statement added.
