With the state government set to give National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) a face-lift, corps members deployed in Ekiti State for the one-year programme could look forward to a pleasurable time in their Orientation Camp.
The state spoke of plan to make the camp in Ise/Orun/Emure – Ekiti more conducive for the corps members during the orientation programme. Governor Kayode Fayemi, who was represented by his deputy, Prof Modupe Adelabu, made the disclosure yesterday at the opening of the camp and swearing-in of the 2014 Batch “A” corps members
Fayemi said his government believed the youths are the future of the nation and has therefore being working assiduously to provide enabling environment for them where they could adequately develop their potentials for the nation building.
He described the NYSC as a veritable scheme for national development and unity, adding that its immense contribution to the country since inception could not be quantified.
The governor urged the corps members to use their stint in the camp to learn relevant Ekiti culture and skills that will make their primary assignment fruitful and worthwhile.
Assuring them of safety during their stay in the state, Fayemi warned the corps members against involvement in partisan politics.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the NYSC State Governing Board and Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Kayode Olaosebikan, urged the corps members to let the sacred words in the Oath of Allegiance they swore to be their guiding principles as they go about their primary assignments to contribute their quota to nation building.
He reminded them that the nation was looking up to them as the reservoir of virile and highly-skilled manpower to navigate the national development, charging them to strive to live up to expectation by being role models in their conduct as they could not afford to fail.
Coordinator of the NYSC in the state, Lady Ngozi Chukwuka thanked the government for the support it has been given to the scheme. She told her audience that the state recently donated a 20-seater coaster bus and gave cash award to State Honours Award Winners among 2013 Batch “A” corps members.
Lady Chukwuka who disclosed that 1,400 corps members comprising 704 males and 696 females were deployed in Ekiti, said the NYSC is poised to assist in the development of the state through the primary assignment of corps members and their Community Development Service.
Dignitaries and state functionaries at the ceremony included: the Emure Local Government Caretaker Committee Chairman, Febisola Adewale, Mr. Abayomi Akinlaja an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), who representated the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Felix Uyanna, the Ise/Orun District Superintendent of Police, Mr. Olatunbosun Gbenga and the representative of the Ekiti State Chief Judge, Justice L.O. Ogundana, who administered the Oath of Allegiance on the youth corps members.
