Education & Human Capital Development
Education & Human Capital Development is the first and most enduring attribute of the Ekiti people, no wonder we have the enviable privilege of being called “The Fountain of Knowledge” and in some cases “The Land of Honour”.
Science and Technology (S&T) combine human knowledge with the ability to produce and use tools and machines in order to solve real life problems. It is no wonder that the Dr Kayode Fayemi led Government has as part of its 8 point agenda: Education and Human Capital Development, Industrial Development and Infrastructural Development. Education, Science and Technology means progressive and consistent contemporary advancement in our rapidly changing World. It means the ability to function well and participate within the global economy.
The Ministry of Education Science and Technology has the responsibility of initiating and implementing educational policies of Government that will ensure a conducive, teaching and learning environment with a tangible outcome for all in the area of self reliance; as well as adopt and deploy a System of Innovation Approach for technological growth. The Ministry coordinates the activities of Eight (8) Parastatals:
- The Teaching Service Commission (TSC),
- The State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB),
- The Education Endowment Fund (EEF),
- Agency for Adult and Non Formal Education (AANFE),
- Board for Technical and Vocational Education (BTVE),
- Library Board,
- Scholarship Board
- School Enterprise Board (SEP).
It also has Seven (7) Departments namely:
- Finance & Administration,
- Planning Research and Statistics,
- Evaluation & Standard,
- Inspectorate,
- Science Technology & Mathematics,
- Schools,
- Tertiary Education.
Our Administration is beginning to deliver on its promise of free Education up to SS3 level.
We have just concluded the payment for WASSCE for all our SS3 students in public secondary schools. The payment for JAMB for all Ekiti State Students who have a total of Six Credits including Mathematics and English in one sitting in either WASSCE of NECO has also been concluded. Dr. Kayode Fayemi also made good his promise at his inaugural address to look into the fees of Ekiti State Tertiary Institutions by reviewing it downward to a maximum of Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000.00) across the board. He also took a bold step of inaugurating an Independent Task Force / Visitation Panel to the Education Sector in Ekiti as a prelude to the proposed Education Summit.
In demonstration of our resolve in the area of Science and Technology, the state hosted a high powered team of Experts from the National Centre for Technological Management (NACETEM) led by their Director General. We have also sustained the communication between the State and the World Bank over the World Bank assistance on Programmatic Investment Lending (PIL) as we are privileged to be one of the three (3) states in Nigeria chosen by World Bank to benefit from this laudable programme. To ease transportation difficulties, SUBEB will distribute 400 Motorcycles to its Teachers within this week. We are not relenting on our efforts to mobilize all stakeholders in Education, Science and Technology to ensure full participation for a reasonable outcome.
We believe that Government, Communities, Teachers, Parents and Children all have a part to play in this quest for greatness and a sustainable future we can all be proud of. Ekiti a gbe gbogbo wa o. “By 2014, a computer on every student's desk; free and compulsory education up to senior secondary school; special initiatives for physically challenged students; establishment of institute of Science and Technology; creation of state sports academy for gifted youth”.
