General Information

Ekiti South West Local Government, Ilawe Ekiti is one of the 16 Local Governments in Ekiti State.

Sequel to the creation of Ondo State in 1976, Ekiti South West Local Government was established under the Local Government Edict of 1976 published in the Gazette as ODSLN5 of 1976. The effective date was 1st September, 1976 while the headquarter is Ilawe Ekiti.

Vision
The vision of the local government is to make the people of the area move closer to the government of the day through the provision of soacil amenities and infrastructures Ekiti south west local government to be prosperous and economically viable throughenhanced and efficient service delivery thereby making the local government the cynosure of all eyes.

Mission
To rapidly provide socio-economic infrastructure that is effective this facilitating a healthy ,well coordinated and self-reliant grassroots people.

 

Towns & Villages
The Local Government has three(3) major towns, Ilawe Ekiti, Igbara-odo Ekiti and Ogotun Ekiti. It has additional 33 villages and farmsteads such as:- Ilupeju Alatere, Olomide, Odopa, Erita, Geleje, Asa, Subulade, Ejio, Sajowa, Partrick Apata, Itamerin, Igboore, Alagbede, Aba Ibadan, Lawrence camp, Ayedarade, Araromi, Bolorunduro, Ilupeju Edetedo, Kajola, Ayegunle, Ajebamidele, Bolodunro Otan, Ayedun, Akola, Iporogun Osodi, Orubiliri, Ekasa Agbedola, Aba Efon, Ajewole, Amogbon & Akomolafe.

 

Population & Geographical Landscape:
The population of the Local Government according to the year 2006 census figure is 165,277 and year 2007 projected population of 171,807(appendix I)
The Local Government shares boundaries with Ado Local Government in the NorthEast and Ikere Local Government in the SouthEast.It also shares boundaries with irepodun/ifelodun Local Government in the Northwest,Ifedore Local Government of Ondo state in the SouthWest and oriade Local Government of Osun State in the SouthEast.

The Local Government occupies a total landmass of 175000 sq km with length and breath.

Homogeneity: 
The people are homogenous in culture ,tradition and values. There are pockets of other tribes like Ebira ibo and oyo people from osun state .Indigenes speak the Ekiti dialect with slight different intonations of the various towns and villages. The culture  of the people is identical and similar to that of yorubas of the southern Western Nigeria. Their mode of dressing is the Yoruba attires though the elites adorn the English dresses particularly those in government establishment.They also enjoy the mix of local music comprising of ogbele ,Ayu,Apiri,Uluijebu,Juju and Highlife.

The people are predominantly Christians some are Muslim faithfuls,while few practice the traditional religion such as ogun ,ifa,obatala, sango etc

 

Functions of the Local Government

The functions of the local government according to the fourth schedule of the 1999 nigeria constitution spell out

    1. Making recommendations to the State commission on Economic planning on the economic development of the state.
    2. Collection of taxes and issuing of licences of motorcycles truck,wheelbarrows, hawking,television,radio etc
    3. Establishment and maintenance of roads ,streets,drains and other public highways,parks,Open spaces and drains and other public utilities as may be prescribed by law.
    4. Naming of streets and roads,numbering of houses,registration of all births,deaths and marriages.
    5. establishments and maintenance of cementries,burial ground and homes for the destitute of infirm.
    6. Establishment,maintenance and regulation of slaughter houses,slaughter slabs,markets,motor parks and public conveniences.
    7. 7.Provision and maintenance of public conveniences,sewage and refuse disposal
    8. 8 Assessment of privately owened houses or tenements for the purpose of levying such rates as may be prescribed by the house of Assembly.
    9. 9 control and regulation of outdoor advertising and hoarding ,movement and keeping of pets of all description,shops and kiosks,restaurants,bakeries and other places for sale of food to the  public ,laundries and  licensing and control of the sale of liquor.
    10. Provision and maintenance of health and medical services such as dispensaries and maternity centres.
    11. 11.Development of agricultural and natural resources including livestock and vetenary services.

There are other additional functions like:-

    1. Trades and Industry-perform transport services and other commercial undertakings like provision of buses for public transportation
    2. Rural water supply-like wells,bore-holes in the local government areas
    3. Street lightings-responsible for extension of electricity to major streets
    4. Housing-provision of housing estates either for sale or rentage to members of the public
    5. Urban layouts and settlements-Carrying out surveys and provision of master plans which will guide settlements patterns and prevent building irregularities.

There are two arms of government at the Local government level.They are the executive and the legislative. However,executive chairman appoints the secretary to the local government and supervisors who must be confirmed by the legislature.The Director of Administration is the head of the Administrative staff.
There are eight operational departments in the Local Government  .They are:

  • Personnel management
  • Finance and supply
  • Works Lands and Housing
  • Agriculture and Natural Resources
  • Community Development
  • Environmental & waste management
  • Budgeting, Planning, Research &statistics

The administrative set up involves the political functionaries in the running of administrative machinery of the local government. The chairman is the political head and assisted by the vice chairman. there is the secretary to the local Government while the supervisors oversee the departments .Also ,there are special Advisers with specific portfolios. Part of the political functionaries is the legislative arm of the local government. The leader of the house heads it. There is a clear separation of powers at the local government. The local Government Administration is headed by elected chairman who is the chief executive and director of Administration who is accounting officer ,The chairman is supported d by the following officers to constitute the executive arm of the L.G

  1. The vice chairman
  2. Secretary to the L.G
  3. Supervisor for works
  4. Supervisor for Health
  5. Supervisor for Agriculture
  6. Supervisor Education and community development

The legislative council is composed of eleven democratically elected council representing each of the wards in the Local Government, with the under listed Principal officers.

Key Facts
The Political And Administrative Set-Up
The whole Local government is divided into two contituences.Constituency I, consist of words 1-7 while constituency II is made up of words 8-11
The Local Government is delineated into eleven wards viz:-

  • Ward 1-aaye quarters
  • Ward 2-irorin
  • Ward 3-Okebedo I
  • Ward 4-okebedo II
  • Ward 5-Adin
  • Ward 6-Oke Emo
  • Ward 7-Oke Ode quarters
  • Ward 8-oke ode quarters
  • Ward 9-odo Igbara
  • Ward 10-iloda/Ifakin
  • Ward 11-okemi/Iba

Ekiti South West Local Govt,Ikere L.gand Ise/Orun LG Areas belong to Ekiti South Federal Constituency I and also forum part of Ekiti South senatorial District.

 

Traditional Institution

There are three independent obas in the area who are assisted by High chiefs and chiefs. The obas also appoint bale to oversee the villages and farmsteads that abound in Ekiti South West Local Government Area. There are three paramount rulers.They are:

    Ologotun of Ogotun Ekiti and chairman traditional council of the Local government.

    II Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti

  3. HRM, Oba Edward Jayeola
