To promote accelerated agricultural development, increase production in all the sub sectors; and realisation of the structural transformation in the socio-economic development of the rural areas.

The ministry’s key missions are for:

• Youth empowerment
• Massive food production and massive cash crop production where we have comparative advantage
• Improved protein intake by the citizenry
• Maintenance of a virile and effective extension services which can deal with problems of production, preservation, storage and marketing of agricultural produce
• Maintenance of general surveillance with our borders to ensure maximum revenue
• Coordination of agricultural data for effective and efficient farming activities
• Maintenance of Animal Health and its spill over effect on human health
• Regeneration of forest resources
• Provision of natural silk fibre through the establishment of mulberry plantation and rearing of
• Silkworm towards the industrialization of the State for cottage industry

Functions

1. Maintenance of a virile and effective extension services which can deal with problems of production, preservation, storage and marketing of agricultural products.
2. Promotion of the production and supply of inputs for crops, livestock and fisheries using combined activities of government and private agencies.
3. Ensuring access to land by those who wish to engage in farming and other related activities
4. Training manpower for agricultural development.
5. Ensuring self sufficiency in basic food commodities with the small farmers as the centre piece of production.
6. Control of plants and animal diseases
7. Establishment of appropriate .institutions for the provision/ distribution of farm inputs and dissemination of modern farm practices to small/large scale farmers.
8. Investment in rural development, including road networks, water supply and small earthen dams for irrigations, improved agricultural and economic activities so that the standard of living of the rural dwellers is improved
9. Sufficient grading and certification of exportable commodities like cocoa, coffee, cashew, palm kernel and palm oil to attract optimum prices at the international market.
10. General surveillance within our borders to ensure maximum revenue returns from cash crops.
11. Coordination of agricultural data for effective and efficient farming activities, and
12. Maintenance of animal health and its spill over effect on human health.
