VISION

To be a front line Ministry, setting the pace in disease prevention, delivery of high quality Health Care services and ensuring the total health of her populace.

MISSION

Promoting and providing equitable and accessible high quality Health Care delivery system to Ekiti citizenry and beyond through collaboration with all stakeholders.

STRUCTURE

The Ministry of Health is headed by the Honourable Commissioner who is the Chief Executive with the responsibility of collaborating with the Permanent Secretary who is the Accounting Officer and Head of Administration. The Ministry provides services through departments, comprising:

  • Department of Finance and Administration
  • Department of Planning, Research and Statistics
  • Department of Hospital services and Training
  • Department of Primary Health Care and Disease control
  • Department of Nursing services
  • Department of Pharmaceutical services.

FUNCTIONS

Department of Finance and Administration:

  1. The department facilitates the administrative discharge of duties in the Ministry.
  2. It is responsible for the management of human, material and financial resources of the Ministry to accomplish all its functions.
  3. The department is also responsible for the preparation of budget estimates, processing of financial transactions, maintenance of office furniture and equipment, collation and rendition of reports, financial implementation of capital projects and monitoring of Ministry’s activities.

Department of Planning Research and Statistics:

It is composed of Planning, Research, Statistics and Health Management Information Units. It undertakes the preparation of annual operational plans, research and collation of statistical data aimed at keeping adequate information necessary for the development of the health care delivery system.

The department serves as the Secretariat of the Ministerial Tenders Board, facilitating the execution of ministerial procurements, as well as facilitating promulgation and implementation of state health policies, being the secretariat of the State Council of Health.

Department of Hospital Services and Training:

This department oversees the inspection of public and private hospitals, school dental health education, traditional medicine practice, State medical board. The leadership of the State monitoring committee of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria is also resident in this department.

Department of Pharmaceutical Service:

This department is responsible for pharmacy related policy matters in the State. It is made up of four units viz: Unified Drug Revolving Fund, Inspectorate and Monitoring, Training/Education and Drug production units.

Department of Nursing Services :

It undertakes the supervision of the State schools of Nursing and Midwifery as well as ensuring the quality of nursing and midwifery practice in the State. It liases with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in all matters of Nursing /Midwifery education and practise.

Department of PHC & Disease Control:

The Department is made up of fifteen units. The department among other functions formulates and implements Government health policies at both the State and LGA levels. It coordinates the activities within the state and collaborates with other health related ministries and parastatals. It oversees coordination, implementation, monitoring and supervision of immunization, nutrition, family planning, safe motherhood, breast feeding, school health, programmes, as well as supervision of the State school of Health Technology. This department is also responsible for preventing the prevalence of infectious diseases. These diseases include Tuberculosis, Malaria, HIV/AIDS, Onchocerciasis, Guinea worm, Filariasis and Leprosy.

  • The Ministry supervises agencies such as the Primary Health Care Development Agency, Hospitals Management Board and University Teaching Hospital
  • Ekiti State has 433 Health facilities spread across the 16 LGA State.  There are 286 primary, 20 secondary, 2 tertiary and 125 private Health     facilities.

  • The state has a mix of qualified health professionals in its employment at the various levels of care. These include 36 consultants, 220 medical doctors, 22 dental surgeons, 47 pharmacists and     1,102 Nurses / midwives.

  • Ekiti state operates a Drug Revolving Fund which guarantees access to good quality drugs at prices which are affordable to most people. They are sustained through cost recovery via user fees, which cycle {revolve} to purchase more drugs. Currently there is 100% coverage at Secondary and PHC facilities. Drugs are warehoused under secure conditions at the Central Medical Stores. There is also a Mega depot which serves private pharmacies and patent medicine vendors.
