Ekiti People Join U.N. In Combating Violence Against Women

Citizens of  Ekiti State are set to join the rest of the world to stand against violence against women and children.

The State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Social Development and Gender Empowerment, Mrs. Fola Richie-Adewusi who made this known in Ado Ekiti, said the state has organised a 16-day programme in support of elimination of violence against women.
Mrs. Richie-Adewusi explained that the United Nations has set aside the 25th day of November for the programme in cognisance of the violence based crimes such as rape and other domestic violence that women were subjected to worldwide.
She highlighted activities earmarked for the year’s programme to include a sensitization walk/rally round the state capital on Friday, November 30.

According to her, there would be a gender summit where women and gender issues would be discussed adding that prominent personalities in the state would be on hand to air their views on the topic.
Mrs. Richie Adewusi said that a gender-Based violence Management Committee would soon be inaugurated to see to the welfare of victims of domestic violence and ensure that culprits were sanctioned.
The Commissioner however stressed that the implementation of Gender Based violence law was a collective responsibility to ensure its desired impact on the society adding that the focus is usually more on women as they are considered more vulnerable.
