Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, his Rivers State counterpart and Chairman of the Governors’ Forum, Mr. Rotimi Ameachi and the Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi, were among the state governors issued the newly introduced Tax identification Number (TIN), shortly after the new tax policy was launched in Abuja on Thursday.
The issuance was carried out by President Goodluck Jonathan at a brief ceremony, shortly before the National Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Thursday.
Other governors who were also issued the PIN at the brief event marking the introduction of the tax policy were Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and Dr Babangida Aliyu of Niger State.
The President and Vice President Namadi Sambo, had earlier been issued their Tax Identification Numbers, in line with the new tax policy.
TIN is an electronic database system for the registration and storage of data of tax payers in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, President Goodluck Jonathan said: “TIN is a revolutionary poll of tax administration and holds immense potential not just for expanding the nationwide tax base with consequent increase in revenue collection accruable to all tiers of government but it is also a big step in the modernisation of the Nigerian tax system in line with global best practices and expectations.
“The idea of national tax policy first arose from the report of the presidential study and a private sector working group set up in the year 2002, which examined the Nigerian tax system and made recommendations towards entrenching a better tax policy and improved tax administration in our dear country,” he added.
