Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has congratulated his Edo State counterpart, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on his victory at Saturday’s governorship election.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Olayinka Oyebode, Fayemi described Oshiomhole’s victory as a well deserved reward for his purposeful leadership and the positive impact his administration has made on the lives of the Edo people.
Fayemi also hailed the Edo State electorate for coming out en masse and for being bold and courageous in taking their electoral decision based on critical evaluation of the ability, credibility and antecedence of the candidates.
Fayemi said the massive turnout of voters and the orderly manner they participated in and monitored the various stages of the election made it difficult for election riggers to steal their votes.
He said some lessons could be learnt from Oshiomhole’s electoral victory; The Edo people voted for Oshiomhole because of his record of good performance. In achieving this they shut their ears against sentiments and were prepared to defend their votes. It also shows that given a level playing ground, the Nigerian electorate can use the opportunity of periodic election to determine the fate of their leaders.
Fayemi noted that Oshiomhole won on the strength of rapid socio-economic development witnessed in the state since the Edo governor mounted the saddle in November 2008.
Fayemi gave kudos to the leadership of INEC for the succeeful conduct of the election and urged the commission to work on some lapses noticed during the election.
These, according to him, include lateness of electoral materials to designated points, disappearance of names and pictures of voters in the register and other logistic problems which disenfranchised many eligible voters.
