Christ’s School, Ado Ekiti has emerged the winner of the 2011 Ekiti State Principal’s cup after defeating its counterparts from Government College, Efon – Alaaye by 5 goals to 4 in a breath-taking penalty school – out.
The match which was played at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado-Ekiti went into penalty shoot-out after 90 minutes of regulation time ended goalless.
Among the dignitaries at the Stadium were Governor Kayode Fayemi represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Yemi Adaramodu, Commissioners for Youth & Sports, Education, Science and Technology, Works and Transport and Women Affairs, Social Development and Gender Empowerment, Chief Folorunso Olabode, Dr. Eniola Ajayi, Mr. Sola Adebayo and Mrs. Fola Richie-Adewusi respectively.
Chairman of Ekiti State Sports Council, Prince Ade Adetola, and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mrs Desola Oke and other top government officials were also in attendance.
Governor Fayemi in his address said the present administration had improved sporting activities in the State through the renovation of the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium and resuscitation of grassroots Sports, particularly football as parts of government’s efforts to take-off the minds of the youths from social vices.
While urging the players to improve on their performance to rank among future soccer stars at national and international levels, the Governor challenged individuals and corporate bodies to collaborate with the State Government to take Sports to the next level of development.
The Commissioner for Youths and Sports said the essence of the competition is to harness the hidden talents from the grassroots and bring them to limelight.
He added that a financial institution in the State has registered its intention to partner the government to sponsor the next edition of the competition which will commence by September 2012. Odo-oro High School, Odo-Oro Ekiti had earlier defeated Corpus Christi College Ilawe by 2 goals to nil in the 3rd place match while the female soccer championship among Council Areas in the state was won by Ikere Local Government which defeated Oye LG by 5-0 .
Trophies, medals, balls, Jerseys and boots were presented to outstanding players, schools and local governments at the end of the match.
