Plans to establish a mechanic village in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, will soon become a reality as the State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has approved the Certificate of Occupancy for the proposed site for the mechanic village.
Speaking at a meeting in Ado Ekiti with the leadership of the National Automotive Council (NAC) led by its Director-General, Engineer Aminu Jalal, the Governor said the establishment of a mechanic village would not only make the state a choice destination for investors but would also enhance the socio-economic development of the state.
Dr. Fayemi who expressed dissatisfaction that many Ekiti residents have to travel as far as Lagos before they could get their damaged vehicles properly fixed, said the proposed mechanic village will enhance artisanship, capacity building and sustainable development.
He added that though the idea of establishing the village was brought by National Association of Technicians and Artisans (NATA), it coincided with the plan of the State Ministry of Commerce and Industries to establish same, hence government’s interest in a Public-Private Partnership arrangement.
The Governor however said the government was eager to see the mechanic village become a reality, adding that apart from the approval of the C of O, the survey of the parcel of land had also been done.
In his remarks, the Director General of the National Automotive Council (NAC) , Engr. Aminu Jalal said the establishment of a mechanic village had become imperative with the constant change in automobile technology.
The Director-General stated that the village was planned to be piloted by six states but ten states have expressed interest in the establishment.
The proposed mechanic village, according to Jalal, will house among others, a mechanic workshop, spare parts shops as well as a relaxation centre for customers.
