Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has congratulated former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku on his 80th birthday.
Fayemi in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Olayinka Oyebode, described Anyaoku as a great Nigerian who served his country with great enthusiasm and uncommon passion without expecting anything in return.
The governor described Anyaoku as a leading light in diplomatic circle who contributed immensely to the emergence of Nigeria as a leading player in global politics and a respected voice in the international community.
He noted that Anyaoku recorded unprecedented successes in office during his tenure as Minister of External Affairs in which he brought the experience he had previously acquired in key diplomatic postings outside the country to bear.
Fayemi added that Anyaoku’s hard work was rewarded in 1990 when he was chosen as the Secretary General of the Commonwealth a position he used to promote democracy, constitutional order and human rights all over the world.
The governor further praised the roles played by Anyaoku in ensuring that democracy was restored in Nigeria when he joined forces with the global community to prevail on the Sani Abacha junta to restore democratic order and respect human rights of Nigerians.
He pointed out that Anyaoku has always been assisting elected leaders in Nigeria by serving as a bridge builder and working towards peace, unity and harmony in the face of the various challenges confronting the country.
Fayemi urged Anyaoku not to relent in advocating the entrenchment of principles of true federalism, equity, justice, fair play, good governance and egalitarianism in the Nigerian federation.
