The Ekiti State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Olawale Fapohunda has reiterated the commitment of the state government to making the state crime free.
Speaking in Ado – Ekiti during a meeting he held with stakeholders in the criminal justice sector on the increasing number of awaiting trials in the state, Mr. Fapohunda said government is working assiduously to ensure that crime and lawlessness is kept at the barest minimum in the state.
He stressed the need to encourage lawyers to fast track the process of justice.
In his remarks, the Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Hon. Justice Ayodeji Daramola stressed the need for adequate police protection in the court premises and for the officials to ensure orderliness and protect lives and property.
He decried the situations where small-time offenders are put together with criminals and appealed to the state government to build court cells for inmates with simple offences.
Also speaking, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mr. Niyi Familoni highlighted some of the challenges facing the Justice sector to include delay in police investigation files been sent to the DPP’S Office, Inmates rejection of legal prosecutors and government’s ability to ensure that inmates don’t go back to prisons when they are released by providing after cell opportunities.
Others are more prison facilities for classification of offences and more vehicles for easy transportation of inmates to and from courts.
Some of the stakeholders in attendance were the Chief Judge of Ekiti State Comptroller of prisons, Mr. Aremu Tajudeen, House of Assembly Vice Chairman Committee on Judicial and Legal Matters, Hon. Ayodeji Odu, the Director of SSS,represented by Mr. Chinedu Odika, the Commandant of NSCDC, Mr. Augustine Obiekwe, the Commissioner of Police represented by O.C Legal, Femi Falade, Mr. Michael Oladeinde Commander of NDLEA, Mr. Akingbade Dele, Barr. Tunde Olaolorun Esq, NBA Chairman, Mr. Joseph Adewunmi among others.
