Ekiti State government has expended over one billion, seven hundred Million naira (N1.7b) as Social Security allowance to about 19,270 elderly citizens in the State since Oct 2011.
The State Commissioner for Labour, Productivity and Human Capital Development, Mr. Oluwole Ariyo made this known while monitoring payment of the March 2013 allowance to indigent elderly citizens under the social security scheme initiated by the Fayemi led administration.
Mr. Ariyo who described the scheme as the right of the elderly citizens of the state and not privilege, said that Governor Kayode Fayemi was passionate about the welfare of the people.
The Commissioner re-affirmed government’s determination to eradicate poverty in the State and improve life expectancy of the elderly citizens across the state.
Mr. Ariyo who visited and paid those that cannot come to the venue of the payment due to ill health and old age, prayed with them and delivered words of encouragement from the Governor.
The Commissioner expressed happiness over the peaceful conduct of the payment team and the security agents as well as the Council Assistants reminding them that the scope of the exercise will soon be expanded to accommodate more elderly people in the state.
