Ekiti State Government has paid a sum of N160million as counterpart fund to ensure the effective take off of the National Health Insurance Scheme – Millennium Development Goals – Maternal and Child Health (NHIS-MDGs-MCH) Project in the state.

The State Commissioner for Health, Professor Olusola Fasubaa who made this known in Ado Ekiti, said Governor Fayemi will officially flag off the project on Wednesday 9th October, 2013 at the Basic Health, Oke-Oniyo in Ado Ekiti.

Professor Fasubaa noted that according to a recent World Bank report, Ekiti has the lowest maternal and morbidity rates in the country with 95 per 1,000 children adding that the state also recorded the highest life expectancy in Nigeria.

The Commissioner said that the Fayemi led administration would continue to partner with UNICEF, World Bank and other international agencies as well as non-governmental organizations in providing quality health service care to the people of the state.

According to him, the NHIS – MDGs – MCH project will take off in 30 designated Health Facilities to take care of children under 5years old and pregnant women while the 53 Health Centers earlier chosen for Free Health Mission would continue to provide health services to the elderly people of 65years and above, persons with disability, pregnant women and children under 5years.

Noting that the health programmes are designed to improve the lot of the people particularly the rural dwellers, Fasubaa said that patients with critical health challenges would be referred from the Primary Health Centers to Secondary and Tertiary health institutions for further treatment.
