• Deputy governor gets report, commends members
Two years after their inauguration as Projects Independent Monitoring Group by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), members of the task team were yesterday asked to step down. They were, however, commended for being diligent in the discharge of the mandate given to them.
The seven-man committee was raised by SUBEB to ensure that projects awarded to contractors are not abandoned and to guide against approving shoddily implemented projects for payment.
Deputy Governor Prof Modupe Adelabu, who gave the commendation during a visit to her office in Ado-Ekiti by members of the monitoring team and the SUBEB management, said it was important for the committee to wind up its operations so that its members would not get too familiar with contractors and be compromised.
She also praised the members for being prudent in the management of the meagre resources given to them to ensure proper monitoring of projects across Ekiti State Professor Adelabu, who doubles as the Chairperson of the SUBEB, said a visit to all SUBEB projects across the state and the feedback reaching the government showed the assiduity of the team in the discharge of the task of project monitoring.
According to her, all the SUBEB projects supervised by the team were implemented to specification by the contractors and were delivered on time unlike in the past when contractors either took mobilization fees and abandoned site, or did shoddy jobs.
The SUBEB chairperson, who told the team members they have succeeded in writting their names in the hall of fame by justifying the confidence reposed in them, said the government will not hesitate call
for their services in the future.
The coordinator of the team, Mr Kayode Dada, an engineer, who said the task given to members was tough, especially with the attitude of contractors to government projects, thanked the SUBEB management for their cooperation which lessen their difficulties in the process of doing their work.
He described his the team as truly independent as the Board gave them a free hand to carry out its assignment, as according to him, contractors were compelled to comply with the teams directives and implement the contracts assigned to them to specification.
Also speaking, the SUBEB Director of Research, Planning and Statistics, Mr. Olusegun Ajibola explained that the constitution of the monitoring team was borne out of the ingenuity of Prof Adelabu, who insisted that something must be done to ensure that projects are no longer abandoned and that shoddily implemented projects are not approved for payment.
