An additional 5,000 elderly citizens are expected to benefit from the Ekiti State Social Security Scheme for the elderly.
The State Commissioner for Labour, Productivity and Human Capital Development, Mr. Oluwole Ariyo who dropped this hint in Ado Ekiti said Governor Fayemi approved the addition during the second anniversary of the scheme.
Mr. Ariyo explained that the on-going enumeration of eligible elderly people for the scheme is to guarantee the accommodation of all qualified people in the scheme.
The Commissioner said that he would undergo an advocacy tour to traditional rulers to sensitize all stakeholders on the benefit of registering indigent people of 65 years and above.
Saying that the enumeration exercise would hold in the Oba’s Palaces and community halls, Ariyo explained that the state government disallowed the use of local government secretariat and party secretariat in order to ensure equal access to all Ekiti indigenes irrespective of their individual political affiliations.
The Commissioner enjoined potential beneficiaries to cooperate with the officials conducting the enumeration exercise in order to achieve the target of banishing poverty from Ekiti.
In his remarks, the Alara of Aramoko Ekiti in Ekiti West Local Government Area, Oba Adegoke Adeyemi described the social security scheme as a welcome development and likened it to the social welfare package existing in the United Kingdom.
Oba Adeyemi pledged that his subjects would abide by all the laid down procedure of the scheme.
He also expressed gratitude to Governor Fayemi led administration for the construction of the New Oba’s palace through the Community Development Programme sponsored by the state government.
