Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has charged leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to work hard in winning more members into the party ahead of the 2014 governorship election expected to hold in the state by June.
The Governor gave the admonition on Monday in Ado Ekiti shortly after the state Interim Executive Committee of the party was inaugurated by the Interim National Vice Chairman (South West), Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo.
The five-man Ekiti APC Interim Executive Committee has Chief Olajide Awe as Chairman. Other members are Mr. Abiodun Ogunleye (Secretary), Alhaji Azeez Awolokun ( Treasurer), Mrs. Nike Olaosebikan ( Public Relations Officer) and Chief Dele Falusi (Organising Secretary).
The Interim Executive Committee will be in office pending the time congresses will be conducted at the ward, local government and state levels where substantive executives are to be elected to manage the affairs of the party.
Governor Fayemi described the constitution of the interim executive as “another critical point in the making of a party formed to rescue Nigerians from a journey without maps and a directionless movement”.
Fayemi explained that the party’s interim state exco will also guide the Registration Committee to be sent from the national secretariat to oversee registration exercise of members in all units, wards and local government areas to be conducted in the next two weeks.
He noted that the registration of members is very important to strengthen the party and prepare for the gubernatorial election to be held in the middle of the year.
Fayemi said, “This is critical because we have election this year, our (Ekiti governorship) election is June 2014 and the earlier this exercise is completed the better for us.
“We want it wrapped up before INEC blows the whistle in March which is about 90 days before the election is conducted.
“We are happy that Ekiti State is the first place where the interim executive has been out in place and this EXCO will take charge of the party pending the time of time we would have congresses at the ward, local government, state levels before he national congress”.
The governor expressed satisfaction that the new mega party has been able to integrate members of the three legacy parties that fused together to form APC urging leaders and members to work harder to nurture the party to greater heights.
Fayemi disclosed that APC has created unit level in the party constitution to give the party grassroots appeal.
Speaking earlier, Adebayo urged the newly-inaugurated state interim EXCO to lay solid foundation for registration of members in the state.
Describing the role of the EXCO as advisory, Adebayo charged them to assist the registration committee to be detailed from the national party secretariat to achieve success in its assignment.
