Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has called on security agencies to fish out the killers of a Deputy Editor of Newswatch Newspaper, Mr. Toyin Obadina.
The Governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Yinka Oyebode, said the killing of Obadina by hoodlums suspected to be armed robbers has once again cast a thick pall of gloom and grief on the media profession which has lost its brightest stars in recent years.
Fayemi who urged relevant security agencies to do everything possible to bring Obadina’s killers to justice said failure to apprehend them could dampen the confidence of the members of the public in the security situation.
He expressed shock that a defenceless citizen could be killed in such a brazen manner, saying that failure to apprehend perpetrators of similar crimes in the past encourages criminals to kill law-abiding Nigerians.
The Governor described Obadina as a thoroughbred professional who gave much to the media profession and was committed to the ethics of journalism.
Fayemi said Obadina who had a brief stint in Ekiti State in the course of his career distinguished himself in the state and was fair to all stakeholders during his short but eventful stay in the Land of Honour.
“Mr. Obadina’s contribution to the media profession will not be forgotten in a hurry.
“The unexpected loss of this articulate and brilliant journalist in the prime of his life is indeed painful but we are consoled by the good life he lived and his contribution to make our society better.
“On behalf of the government and people of Ekiti State, I commiserate with the Obadina family, friends, associates of our late brother and the media as a whole.
“I pray God to grant them the fortitude to bear this monumental loss”, the Governor.
