Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has stated that all the legacy projects currently undertaken by his administration are for the good of Ekiti people as they were designed to, on completion, add value to upcoming generations.
The governor who made this assertion during an inspection tour of the projects in Ado Ekiti expressed satisfaction at the commitment of the various contractors handling the projects.
Speaking specifically on the ongoing construction of the 22,000 capacity State Pavilion, Dr Fayemi maintained that it was time the State had a befitting space to host various kinds of social events that may be organized by government and private individuals.
While justifying the ban on the use of secondary schools for social events, the Governor asserted that aside the distractions this has caused for teaching and learning, some of the events have exposed students to untoward social activities.
He added that all kinds of damage are being done by the organizers of the programmes who end up invading the students’ property in the course of their events.
Dr Fayemi while explaining that the Pavilion will be made available to people who might want to use it for all social activities within the ambit of the law, opined that the new pavilion which is already being roofed and plastered is better than the Eagles square Abuja and
Oluyemi Kayode stadium which accommodates approximately 5,000 people.
“Almost every month we have people who come here doing one thing or the other; crusade, musical festival, political gathering, religious meeting and they use the pitches and lawns of our secondary schools. I have banned that from happening because I don’t think it is right to use secondary school pitches for external activities. Apart from the fact that these schools are in session, and then people invade their property, they do all kinds of damage and expose our pupils to untoward social activities. We also feel that it is about time, 17 years after our creation as a state to have a place that can be regularly eyed by all and sundry for their activities.
This is a legacy project, it is better than the Eagles square in Abuja, it is the first of its kind in terms of its curved roofs anywhere in the country. You can see the space, it can conveniently seat 12000 people and about 10,000 standing on the concrete pitch. We are doing it because we believe it is the right thing to do for our state. It is going to last generations yet unborn. You know where our stadium is, how difficult it is to even have an event that has more than 10,000 people there because it is not even 5000 capacity “, the Governor said.
In his remarks, the Special Adviser in the Bureau of Special Projects, Mr Bayo Kelekun who conducted the Governor round the project sites assured Ekiti people that the Fayemi-led administration mean well for the people and will leave no stone unturned in delivering on all its promises.
The projects visited include the State Pavilion, Oba Adejugbe General Hospital which is almost completed, and the new Governor’s Lodge among other ongoing legacy projects.
