Eighty Newly appointed Justices of Peace in Ekiti State have been charged to assist government in maintaining the existing peace in the state.
The State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi gave the charge at the investiture of Justices of Peace Bar in Ado.
The Governor who was represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Omirin noted that investiture of the new Justices of Peace was an evidence of putting up a strong mechanism for quick and transparent dispensation of justice in the state.
Dr. Fayemi enjoined the newly appointed justices of Peace to exercise their powers within the confines of the law. He described their appointment as a challenge, stressing that to whom much is given, much is expected.
Earlier, the State Attorney – General and Commissioner for Justice, Honorable Dayo Akinlaja in his speech explained the functions of Justice of Peace to include; power to preserve peace, suppress riots, disperse disorderly and tumultuous assemblage and also powers to give lawful orders that have to be obeyed by the Police.
Dr. Wole Olugboji who spoke on behalf of the new justices of Peace expressed appreciation to the State Government for the gesture and promised to contribute greatly to the development and maintenance of peace in the state.
