November 9, 2012

Ekiti State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Debo Ajayi has stressed the need to integrate population variables into development in order to make planning of government programmes and policies more people oriented.

Mr. Ajayi made this assertion in during a 2-day workshop on Integration of Population Variables Into Development Planning organised for Directors of Planning, Research and Statistics of various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAS) in the State.

The Commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Sola Folorunso urged the people to appreciate the linkages of population elements with broader developmental issues like health, education, agriculture, environment, development, Security of lives and property all of which are in tandem with the eight-point agenda of present administration in the State.

He recalled that the National Policy for population development was launched in 1988 and revised in 2004 because of new emerging issues which include rising poverty level, food insecurity, HIV/AIDs, Population and environment degradation, as well as special needs for the girl-child among others.

This training Workshop which is expected to be an interactive one was designed to broaden the knowledge of participants on the effects of population growth on the infrastructure and the economy.
