As the Ekiti State Government prepares for the renovation of all the General Hospitals in the State, the State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has said that the renovation exercise would be driven by medical personnel in the hospitals.
The Governor said this while receiving a delegation of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) who were on a courtesy visit to his office on Tuesday. He stated that the renovation which will begin next year would be done with proper consultation with medical directors and nurses in the hospitals.
Dr. Fayemi stressed that the exercise would amount to waste if the medical personnel who know the areas of need are not consulted for their input into the exercise.
He stated that the proposed renovation is not just to beautify the hospitals but also to equip them for optimal service delivery.
While assuring that the 293 primary health centres across the State have been transformed to deliver quality health care services, the Governor expressed worry at the low patronage given to the centres by people; saying that this has rendered the centres to mere dots.
Fayemi asserted that the Primary Health Care Development Agency is working hard to ensure that the grassroots are not left behind in the dividends that obtain in the health care sector.
On the alleged huge tax deduction in the health sector, Governor Fayemi said the Federal Government, not Ekiti State determines the tax regime but the State Government only acts in compliance with the existing tax law.
While assuring the Doctors of fair treatment, the Governor said he would never do anything that could drive Doctors away from the State on any grounds relating to their welfare.
Earlier, the President of the NMA in Ekiti State, Dr Obitade Obimakinde had commended the Governor for the various investments in the health sector, saying that this speaks volume of his commitment to the sector.
Obimakinde had also appealed to the Governor on certain issues bordering on the medical practitioners in the State especially their welfare packages.
The NMA team was accompanied by the State Commissioner for Health, Prof Olusola Fasubaa.
