April 26, 2012

Ekiti State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr.  Babajide Arowosafe has warned Butchers to desist from using Kerosene in abattoirs across the state to prepare cattle slaughtered for human consumption.

Mr. Arowosafe gave the warning in Ado Ekiti, following the arrest of some butchers that were apprehended while flouting the directive that banned the use of kerosene in abattoirs.

Commissioner Arowosafe who spoke through his Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Funmi Ajayi explained that the ban on kerosene in abattoirs was borne out of the fact that the petroleum product was harmful to human physiology and could lead to cancer as well as liver and kidney problems.

Mr Arowosfe stressed that butchers should use firewood or hot water to remove the hides and skins of the animals instead of kerosene stressing that no amount of washing could remove the effect of kerosene from the prepared meat.

The Two of the arrested butchers, Bisi Katara from Ido and Akeem Olawaale from Ifaki pleaded for leniency before they were released after they were fined and the affected meat confiscated and buried.
