Effective tax reform has been described as the antidote and a veritable tool for taking nations out of the current global economic downturn.
This was hinted by Mr. Uyoyoh Inifadhe, a resource person in Ado while delivering a paper titled “Tax Reform as a tool for Economic Development of Ekiti State’’ at a One -Day capacity building workshop on e-payment solution held at the Conference Hall of the old Governor’s Office Ado-Ekiti.
The workshop which was organised for top Government functionaries of the State Board of Internal Revenue was sponsored by Skye Bank Plc. Mr. Inifadhe however mentioned the need for the state Government to make more efforts to facilitate the realization of the objectives of the reforms.
Mr. Inifadhe emphasized that tax officials should be exposed to the modern trends of information technology in order to be able to cope with the reforms, stressing that it is a vital enabler in any transformation programme.
He explained that efficient tax administration requires modern and efficient tax process as well as competent tax personnel to ensure voluntary compliance by tax payers.
Emphasizing that taxation is the most important source of revenue for modern development, Mr. Inifadhe opined that it is through tax reforms
that the state could achieve real development and urged the state to depend less on allocation from the Federation Accounts which has
continued to dwindle.
Earlier, while declaring the workshop open, the Chairman of the State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Ishola Akingbade urged the participants
to personally develop themselves in order to enhance better performance of their duties.
He appreciated the supportive roles of banks and other financial institutions in revenue generation for the state, adding that the seminar was offered by Sky Bank free of charge.
Mr. Akingbade was optimistic that with the new development and training of tax personnel in the state, the Board is set to achieve its target in the revenue generation and therefore called on the participants to avail themselves of the opportunity to enhance productivity.
