Contrary to despair on the existence of the Nigerian State, the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has stated that the future holds better things for the nation as it has continued to defy predictions made by “book makers and soothsayers” on its existence.
The Governor who expressed this view in Ado Ekiti at the inauguration of the State chapter of the Presidential Committee on Centenary Book (PCCB) said Nigeria has what it takes to really be a giant in view of its “chequered history” and the future ahead of it.
Dr. Fayemi said the fragility of the nation’s political independence has not only agitated the minds of Nigerians but also continues to provide “fertile ground for centrifugal tendencies in the country”; adding that the story has been of a “wobbling nation falling today and rising tomorrow”.
The Governor who inaugurated the 9-man committee described the gesture as a step for Nigerians to reflect on the amalgamation of the nationalities that made up the Nigerian nation.
While acknowledging that the nation is currently faced with a lot of inexplicable challenges, Fayemi said the average Nigerian is at a crossroads of identity problem even as the nation is also faced with the understanding of citizenship responsibility to the country.
Governor Fayemi who expressed confidence that the committee would come up with the best input based on the experience of the members stated that the committee has three weeks to submit its report.
The committee which is chaired by Chief Deji Fasuan has Prof. Ishola Olomola, Prof. Simi Afonja, Alhaji Jinadu Ayodele, Oba Adedapo Popoola, the Oore of Otun; Chief Mrs Ronke Okusanya, Hon Rotimi Ajidara, Mrs Olaseeni Adenike and Mr Akindele Ariyo as members.
