Education, which is the main industry of Ekiti State, will continue to receive government attention and nothing will distract the present
administration from fully implementing its strategic plans to make products of Ekiti primary, secondary and tertiary institutions rank the best in the country and even beyond.
Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Funmi Olayinka made the assertion in Ado while playing host to the executive members of the Conference of
Alumni Associations of Nigerian Universities (CAANU), who were on a courtesy visit to her office on Friday.
Mrs. Olayinka explained that the prominence given to education in the 8-Point Agenda of Governor Kayode Fayemi and the vigour with which the government has being implementing the policies are clear indications of the administration’s determination to pursue it to a logical
conclusion and restore the glory of education which has always being the pride of the state.
She said Ekiti State Government will continue to give support to the Alumni Association in the tertiary institutions to encourage them because it believed that alumnus have strategic roles to play in the successful implementation of its plan to improve education.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Dr. (Mrs.) Eniola Ajayi had explained some steps already taken by the
government to restore education in the primary and secondary schools in the state to include the education summit which took place last
year, training and re-training of teachers in primary and secondary schools in conventional teaching methods and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
The Commissioner also disclosed that nineteen new primary schools has been approved by the government, and running following increase in
school-age children enrolment and that rural allowance was also approved for teachers in the rural areas to encourage them while the government will continue to supply instructional materials to all schools in addition to the on-going schools renovation.
The Chairman of the Conference of Alumni Associations of Nigerian Universities, (CAANU), Chief Richard Oma Ahonaruogho disclosed that
117 tertiary institutions alumni associations form the membership of CAANU, adding that one of the principal roles of the association is
assisting government to formulate policies that will guide Nigeria universities.
He said CAANU was proud to associate itself with the giant strides of the government of Governor Kayode Fayemi, noting that Ekiti State has
being moving in leaps and bounds since the inception of the government from what they have seen since their arrival in the state.
He canvassed for improved funding for tertiary institutions in the state and for more support for the Ekiti State University Alumni Association and provision of a bus for the state chapter of the association like some other state governments had done.
