Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has disclosed that his administration would soon put in place a Security Trust Fund as a measure to encourage security personnel working in the State.

The Governor made the disclosure while receiving the new Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 8, Mr Jonathan Johnson in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday; saying that this was another way to encourage security personnel to put in thei best in ensuring the security of lives and property of the citizens.

The Security Trust Fund, according to the Governor, would enable both the government and the citizenry extend adequate support and cooperation to security agencies in the bid to build a safer society.

Fayemi who lamented the inadequate number of police personnel in the State called on the authority of the Nigerian Police to augment the numerical strength of its personnel; saying that the over 3,000 personnel of the Nigerian Police in the State are not enough to police the population of 2.7 million people.

He added that though the State enjoys relative peace as no serious criminal activities take place in the State, shortage of personnel may pose serious challenge to the security.

While assuring the support of the Ekiti State Government for the Zone which comprises Ekiti, Kwara and Kogi States, Fayemi  said the Governors of the three states have expressed their commitment to condoning the Zone off from crimes and criminals; adding that it was necessary  for Commissioners of Police to be focused and cooperate with State Governors who are said to be the Chief Security Officers of their States in combatting crime.

He added that the state government has employed the service of men of the Nigerian Army to man gateway towns in the state and address the spill-over of crimes from neighbouring states which has been a major challenge for the State.

Earlier, Johnson, who is the new AIG, Zone 8,  had commended the Ekiti State Government for the support it is giving to the State Command of the Nigerian Police; saying that though it is a federal security agency, it has got more support from state governments.

He promised to put in his utmost best to ensure security of lives and properties in states that make up the zone.

At the reception were the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Dr. Adewale Omirin, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr Yemi Adaramodu; the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sotonye Wakama; Assistant Commissioners of Police in the State, Mr Uduodo Edat and Mr. Mohammed Jimoh as well as their counterparts  from Kogi State, Mr Esa Ogbu.
