The Wife of the Governor Erelu Bisi Fayemi has reiterated her commitment to zero tolerance for rape and all forms of gender violence in Ekiti State.
Erelu Fayemi disclosed this in Ado Ekiti during a sensitisation walk against rape and sexual violence in memory of late Ochanya Elizabeth Ogbanje a 13yr old girl who died of sexual molestation in Benue.
Mrs. Fayemi who described the exercise as a sober reflection noted that Ochanya was abused to death and must be remembered for “war against sexual violence among the girl child “in the society.
The Governor’s wife charged parents and guidance to be watchful over their girl children and open up in case of any form of sexual abuse in their communities.
She assured that the State government would resume judicious implementation of the gender based violence act & law enacted by the government in 2011 and called on all Stakeholders who noticed such case to expose the perpetrators immediately hence begging culture will not be tolerated from any angle.
Mrs. Fayemi charged all Civil society comprising all the NGOs to be up and doing, work hand in hand with the government and also be on the alert on the rampant cases of gender based violence in the state.
Earlier in her remarks, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Women Affairs social development and gender empowerment , Mrs Peju Babafemi also condemned rape in strong term stressing that the right of women and children must be respected and protected.
Mrs. Babafemi expressed confidence in the ability of the Fayemi led administration to address the issue of gender based violence in the state stressing that culprits would be severely punished.
She said the antecedents of both Governor Fayemi and his wife before, during and after his first administration was enough to convince everyone that the battle against gender based violence would be total.
She therefore appealed that women should be given space to live with dignity and exercise their rights in the society peacefully.
Participants at the walk against rape sensitisation in Ekiti include staff of Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender Relevance Initiative Promotion NGO(GRIP) , International Federation of women lawyers (FIDA), Nigerian Assiciation of Women journalists (NAWOJ), Police Wives Association(POWA) amongst others.
