Ado-Ekiti

Ado Ekiti local Government was carved out of the defunct Ekiti Central Local Government bi the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida Administration in may 1989.

Ado Ekiti Government could be regarded as a one town local government with many farm settlements such as Igirigiri, idwgw, Ilamuo, Ago Aduloju, Igimo-Kogo, Ago-Aso, Emirin, Temidire Esunmo, Ureje etc.

Since the Lord Lugard reforms of 1916, Ado-Ekiti has been enjoying a unique political position as a linchpin of Administration when it was made the headquarters of Ekiti divisional Council, it maintained this position until 1952 when Ado-Ekiti District Council was created and started operating in this capacity in 1955.In 1996 when Ekiti State was created, Ado-Ekiti was made the state headquarters.

Ado-Ekiti local government was confirmed the most populous local government in Ekiti state going by the 2006 population census which put the population to 308,621. As at now the local government is pressure to have a population density of 4,3986 person per kilometer.

Geographically, the local government is located on latitude 7o35 and 74o47 North of the equator and longitude 5o11 and 5o16 east of the green which meridian .It is bounded on the North and West by Ifelodun/Irepodun Local Government and east and South by Aiyekire, Ikere and Ekiti South west local Government. Its longest North-south extent is 16km and the longest East-west stretch is about 20km.

Ado-Ekiti Local Government is a one town local Government that doubles as L.G and State headquarter which is about 200m above sea level in the south eastern part of Ireje stream and 500m above sea level in the North east limit. The landscape is dotted with rounded in selbergs and steep sided hills of volcanic origin such as Ayoba hill central to the region are gently undulating slopes which form the source of streams like Amu, Awedele, Ajilosun , Adere etc.

A large percentage of the population engages in agriculture either as a means of livelihood or hobby. Food crops such as rice, beans, cassava, maize and yam and produced throughout the region in large quantities.

Also cash crops like kolanut and cocoa are available in large quantities.

Ado-Ekiti is a municipal local Government and for this reason, the people a homogenous culture which is in harmony with that of other Ekiti towns and villages and the Yoruba speaking people in general.

Apart from the scenic beauty created by the done shaped inselbergs and vegetation covered hills cum the gently undulating landscape. Ado –Ekiti is also blessed with man-made tourist areas. The place of prime importance is the ancient Ewi’s palace which served as the traditional administrative center for Ado and its environs. It is located at the very psyche of an average indigene and will certainly be of interest to tourists is the Fajuyi Memorial Park. This is the point where the annual Remembrance Day ceremony for our past heroes is performed.

The Local Government is divided into 13 wards in the ward creation by the Federal Government. The central city of Ado-Ekiti carries 12 (twelve) out of this, while the other villages share the remaining wards.

The local Government is blessed with high population of both skilled semi-skilled and unskilled manpower and middle and high level manpower of the University of ado-Ekiti and the Federal Polytechnic and the several post primary institutions located within the city and villages and the Federal/State ministries/institutions and private establishments which provide a wide range of job opportunities for various categories of vibrant workers.

There are 69 public primary schools, 97 private nursery and primary schools, 14 public junior and senior secondary schools, 27 private secondary schools in the local government. There are six (6) post secondary institutions in the local government namely:

Ado-Ekiti local government is traditionally headed by one Oba known as Ewi of Ado-Ekiti and surrounded by numerous Baales and quarter chiefs popularly called Ewi-in-council.

The Ewi of Ado-Ekiti is the only recognized traditional ruler in Ado- Ekiti and paramount rulers.

The area lies within the tropical climate with two distinct seasons of wet and dry. The dry weather is brought by the tropical continental (CT) airmass, blowing in from the Sahara desert between the months of November and March and the wet season comes either the tropical maritime (MT) air mass originating from the Atlantic Ocean between the months of April and October.

The total rainfall in the area is 450mm giving a mean monthly rainfall of 121mm.There is a sharp fall in rainfall at a period between july and August (August Break).

Temperature in the region is high throughout the year with a means monthly temperature of 27C and a range of 3.7c between the month of highest temperature (February) and the month of lowest (August).

The whole of the Local government is underlain by the basement complex with the major rocks identified as undifferentiated igneous and laterites and white sand which abound in the area.

Also there are minor deposits of gold and tin ore the mineral natural resources have neither been exploited. The region is endowed with forest resources of all sorts such as animal wild life and hard wood s like Iroko, Obeche, Mohogany and Afara. Apart from this, the federal and state governments have established forest reserves at various points in the region to balance the rate at which the forest resources and being depleted.
