Ekiti State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Chief Mojisola Fafure has reiterated the commitment of the State Government to eliminating rape and other gender-based violence in the state.

Speaking while receiving representatives of some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) under the umbrella of Ekiti State Chapter of Association Against Child Sexual and Gender-Based Violence who were out on a protests march against rape, the Commissioner expressed the support of the state government for all efforts at eliminating all forms of sexual violence.

Chief Fafure who spoke through the permanent secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Eunice Oladimeji said that no stone would be left unturned towards protecting all segments of the society as well as sensitise the people on their rights under the law, while culprits of rape would be prosecuted accordingly and shamed to serve as deterrence to others.

Lamenting the current alarming rate of sexual violence across the globe, Fafure commended the foresight of the wife of the Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, noting that her proactive measure has assisted tremendously in the fight against gender-based violence in the state.

She noted that the state recently reviewed the punishment for rape from a maximum of seven years to life imprisonment while sex offenders would be named, shamed, and have their names recorded in the Sex Offenders Register.

The Commissioner however solicited the continued support of the people for government efforts to eliminate sexual violence in the state.
